Played an impromptu set on ROTA Gallery Radio Hour the other night, and I happened to do a couple of tunes with Sam Egan. Here’s one of them.
By the way, the last episode of this season will be airing 10:00 pm this Sunday night, and will feature Straight, No Chaser and As An Artform, along with some other surprise live musical guests!

I spent the last 30 minutes listening to music and tagging every single post I made in which I share some sort of recording. FOR POSTERITY (also includes covers, as well as some videos)

Also, I now have several shows to add to the calendar! This includes one in a couple weeks, and all of these (so far) are in Rochester:

Hey Buffalonians! Tomorrow and Sunday we will be hosting a yard sale at our wonderful home (366 Ontario) to raise money to get the permits to have shows here again. There is a lot of cool stuff here. I mean, legit cool. We have Idle Hands on DVD, some Fugazi cds, records, band posters, band shirts and a ton of rad vintage clothes. Please stop by! We will have baked goods and maybe I will show you my room :]

If you’re in or around Buffalo you should go to this yardsale/fundraiser for the reopening of a DIY venue. They need funds to get up to code. Background story here.

Last night my beloved home got shut down. What I am wondering is why D.I.Y venue houses have become such a priority for the cops. We’re not hurting anyone. We’re providing these kids with a safe place to be at night, as a venue home we donate to places, we support our local scene…

Some folks may not agree with this, but artists in our city responded by leasing a building, incorporating as a cooperative and starting our own “legitimate” space to hold shows, art exhibits, workshops and more. It allows us to hold DIY events on a regular basis and also to bring DIY ethics to larger portions of our community.

Any punks interested in starting up similar community spaces can hit me up if they want to talk about it at all!

I wonder if something like this could work in Rochester. Or if something like this already exists in Rochester and I’m just oblivious. I guess the Flying Squirrel fits that description (note to self: make that walk over the bridge and check that place out again) Granted, it’s a little ways outside of the whole South Wedge-Monroe Ave area, but not that far.

Sending sympathy, empathy, love, etc to the original poster over in nearby Buffalo. I wish there were more house shows here too. It seems that all the houses that do shows end up getting shut down before they can become established

Playing places that are in Rochester is awesome (upcoming show on the 24th, by the way), but man, so is playing places that aren’t in Rochester.

Anything bigger than a mini-tour would be hard to make happen at the moment, but perhaps a few small jaunts in the warmer months are in order? Ithaca, Oneonta, Alfred, Potsdam, Plattsburgh, Burlington, Albany…a few possibilities. Actually, split that list in half and that makes two long weekends (except I work Saturdays, so…two long mid-week extravaganzii?)

Incoming students who are readers will have fun exploring the Corner-Stone Bookstore located in downtown Plattsburgh, which is about a 15-minute walk from SUNY Plattsburgh’s campus. Literally the only book store we have left in town. Everyone should feel fortunate Cornerstone is still around.

Now with an occult section!

The occult section is worth noting.

Many of my magic(k) books came from their discarded “free box” section, because they refused to actually carry them in the store. I went in one time asking where I might find some Aleister Crowley titles, and the former owner glared at me and said, “WE DON’T CARRY HIS BOOKS”. The new occult section is a welcome change of pace.

I’ve been to this shop. It’s pretty amazing.

There are people who care about gay marriage AND about all those other things. People like me, who are strongly against war and drone strikes, and who would like to get married someday. Bi-national couples, who would like to continue living in the United States without fear of one of them being deported.

A (mostly) great article on working for free. The writer (and many commenters) seem to misunderstand the whole thing with Amanda Palmer not paying backup musicians. If someone you admire asks you to come to a quick practice, learn extremely simple parts, and then jump up on stage for a couple songs…that’s not actually work. You can be an artist who values their work, and still do that occasionally.

Both the writing and music worlds have swung too far in the work-for-free direction. Still, you have to offer up something to people (for free), so that they even know you exist.

Another thing is that, as with Radiohead and Andrew Sullivan, Amanda Palmer was in the right place, at the right time, with the perfect fanbase. Yes it worked out great for her, no it’s not going to work out that way for everyone.

Maybe I’m just thinking about that a little too much for someone who’s only now trying to subsist off of art. (well, at least in part…I’ll let you know how that’s working out in a few months)

Classic Mountain Songs

More than anything else, this CD turned me on to old fiddle and string music, and I hope in some way informed my own music. My favorites are High on a Mountain by Ola Belle Reed (that melody…the way the clawhammer banjo and guitar lines come together…) and I am a Poor Pilgrim of Sorrow, in which a congregation does this acapella call and response that sounds like nothing else I’ve ever heard.

In general, I highly recommend the Smithsonian Folkways series.

I was just told that my latest recording was my cleanest sounding, and at first my response was “I’m surprised too”, but then again I’ve finally started taking some pride in my recording setup, as well as taking some recording advice from one Matt Hall. He always gets great quality 4-track and digital recordings and I just assumed for the longest time that he’s a wizard or something. But really, it boils down to taking pride in what you’re doing, knowing what you’re doing, and the like. I’ll just give away one tiny secret…USE GOOD MIC CABLES.
